How to Improve Egg Quality Before IVF
Egg quality is the quiet engine behind so much of fertility. It influences whether an egg fertilizes, whether an embryo develops, whether it implants, and whether a pregnancy holds. So when someone asks me what they can do before IVF, this is often where I point first.
Here’s the honest version. Age and genetics set the baseline, and no plan changes that. But the environment your eggs finish maturing in is influenced by your health, and that part you can work with. The window is roughly the last three months before retrieval, which is exactly why prep timing matters.
Can you actually improve egg quality?
You can influence it, yes. The egg itself can’t be made younger, but the conditions it matures in, your hormones, your metabolic health, your oxidative-stress load, all shape how well it develops. Better conditions can mean a better-developed egg.
I always say this plainly so no one feels misled: this is about giving your eggs the best possible environment, not about reversing your age. Within that honest frame, there’s real, meaningful work to do.
Why does the 90-day window matter?
Because an egg spends its final months maturing before it’s ovulated or retrieved. The choices you make now are landing on the very eggs your cycle will use a few months from now.
That’s the hopeful part of the biology. Your current picture is a snapshot of recent months, and you have time to improve that picture before your cycle. It’s one of the few places in fertility where the clock works in your favor.
What actually helps egg quality?
The high-yield basics, done consistently:
- Stable blood sugar. Insulin resistance is one of the biggest, most overlooked influences on egg quality. Worth testing and addressing.
- Sleep. Deep, regular sleep supports the hormones that govern egg development.
- An anti-inflammatory, whole-food diet. Color, protein, healthy fats, less processed food.
- Managing oxidative stress. This is the mechanism behind a lot of egg-quality damage, and nutrition and lifestyle both feed into it.
- Moving your body, regularly and without overdoing it.
- Cutting the clear harms. Smoking, THC, and heavy alcohol all work against egg quality.
Notice that most of this overlaps with general health. That’s not a coincidence. Egg quality tends to follow whole-body health, which is why the foundations matter so much.
Do supplements improve egg quality?
Some can support the process, but they’re a supporting actor, not the lead. A few are well studied for egg quality, and a good prenatal foundation matters, but the right choices depend on your situation and should be a conversation with your team, not a guess off a shelf. (More in supplements for IVF.)
The mistake I see most is spending a fortune on supplements while the basics, sleep and blood sugar especially, go unaddressed. Foundations first.
What about his side?
Egg quality gets the spotlight, but sperm quality matters just as much for fertilization and embryo development, and it’s modifiable on a similar timeline. Don’t let his half go unoptimized. (See the male factor pillar.)
I worked with a woman in her early thirties heading into IVF who had been told everything was normal, despite a metabolic and inflammatory picture that fit a PCOS pattern. In the months before her cycle, we focused on the foundations: stabilizing her blood sugar, calming inflammation, and supporting her sleep and nutrition. The markers of her egg health improved noticeably, and she went into her cycle in a much stronger place than where she began. The eggs themselves can’t be made younger, but the environment they finished maturing in was a completely different one by the time it counted.
What should I do first?
Start with blood sugar and sleep, because they move the needle most and cost the least. Build from there, give it the full runway if you can, and keep it sustainable. (See how to prepare for IVF for the bigger picture.)
Give your eggs their best shot
If you want help turning “improve egg quality” from a vague goal into a focused, doable plan for the months before your cycle, that’s exactly the kind of thing I build with clients.
Start with the Fertility Pattern Assessment. A few minutes, no pressure, and it’ll show you where to focus first.
Can you really improve egg quality?
You can influence the environment your eggs mature in, which affects how well they develop. Age and genetics set the baseline and can’t be changed, but metabolic health, sleep, nutrition, and oxidative stress are all modifiable.
How long does it take to improve egg quality?
About three months, since eggs spend their final maturation window over roughly that period before retrieval or ovulation. This is why preparation ideally starts a few months before a cycle.
What is the most important thing for egg quality?
Stable blood sugar and good sleep are two of the highest-yield, most overlooked factors, along with an anti-inflammatory diet and reducing oxidative stress. Foundations matter more than any single supplement.
Do supplements improve egg quality?
Some can support the process, but they work best alongside the basics, not instead of them. The right choices depend on your situation, so discuss them with your team rather than guessing.
